Everyone in life fights several battles with sin. It lives in combination within our bodies and modulates our every desire. Sin exploits the things that are good and desirable in natural human life. Every day, we have to make a decision to shut it down.

Getting Control of the Flesh: A Daily Struggle

And the truth is, our bodies get weary, and thus we have the need for the rest. But what happens when tiredness makes us run away from God’s call? If the Holy Spirit says pray and instead you choose the option of sleep, then that is sin. We have to always remember that our old nature, the flesh, can be enmity against God.

Dominance doesn’t only occur through tiredness. It also entices other wants—such as the craving for sex. It is not sex that is sinful; it is the improper use of it beyond one’s divine ordinance that is sinful. In this manner, Sin deceives our appetites and draws us away from God. Some sins are to be fought by building up our spirit. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that we are able to do this: resist the devil. Fasting, praying, and studying the God’s Word are muscular activities, which establish our spirituality. As with any gym exercise, prayer in tongues builds up the people to conduct the spiritual warfare.

Finally, there will always remain sin and sinfulness not far from us; it must be borne in mind. But as we progress spiritually, our carnal nature is going to look for every opportunity to trip you up—divine. However, with prayer and hard work, we can pull down the flesh day after day. He didn’t win the match in a day; it is a step-by-step process of yielding oneself to being used by God’s power.

Sin lies, but we are not to be deceived. The more one is spiritually fed, the better able he or she is to resist temptations. That is why let us try to overcome the flesh and live not by our own strength but by the power of God.
