Mercy Chinwo: I wear berets to stand out in my craft and style.

Published by on February 22nd, 2023.

Mercy Chinwo is a gospel singer-songwriter. The Obio-Akpor native from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, began singing at the age of eight as a member of her church’s children’s choir. Chinwo rose to prominence after winning Nigerian Idol Season Two in 2012. She has also collaborated with gospel ministers such as Sammie Okposo, Joe Praize, Buchi, Chris Morgan, and Preye. Chinwo debuted her first single, Testimony, in 2015, followed by Igwe a year later. Trust, Excess Love, Omekannaya, Correct, Rest, Imenem, No More Pain, Chinedum, Regular ft Fiokee, Bor Ekom, Incredible God, Power Belongs to Jesus, Oh Jesus, and Akamdinelu are among the other songs she has released from her two albums. In this interview, IJEOMA THOMAS-ODIA discusses her career and the release of soul-lifting songs.

You’ve had an admirable career path. How did it all begin?

My parents noticed that I was always singing and loved to perform around the house to both people and objects when I was six years old. They encouraged me by enrolling me in our local church’s children’s choir, The Apostolic Church Nigeria. It progressed to me singing in the adult choir and even as a backup singer. I participated in a number of competitions, many of which I won. That is how I began my professional music career.

Many musicians will tell you that they got their start in church. You did as well, but why did you stay in the church?

A fish cannot survive without its food source. Jesus gave me this gift, and I am content as long as I remain focused on God’s plan for my life. Nothing can compare to the joy and peace that comes from serving God.

The general perception in Nigeria is that gospel music is not as financially rewarding as mainstream popular music. Do you concur? What has your experience been in terms of profitability?

The Lord’s blessings make rich and add no sorrow. This is my testimony; my life as a gospel music minister has been an interesting journey in every way. The more value you provide, the more results you will receive.

Nigerian music, particularly Afrobeats, has been accepted by the global music industry, with artists collaborating with international stars and winning global awards. How has this affected Nigerian gospel musicians, in your opinion?

I believe that the gospel music industry is evolving and that our minds are open to opportunities that glorify God both locally and globally. Collaborations in the gospel space have occurred on an international scale, and there will be many more. So be cautious.

What are your thoughts on collaborations between gospel and mainstream artists? Would you consider collaboration with a non-gospel artist? If so, who would it be?
First and foremost, gospel music is popular. As regards collaborations, I have a message, so I will only be inclined to collaborate with artists whose values align with the message the Lord has given me.

You just got married. Has this influenced your career decisions thus far?
Marriage is a blessing; it’s been a beautiful journey. It has had a positive impact on my career. The bible says that one will chase a thousand, and two ten thousand, and I am looking forward to seeing all of that become a reality as I live my life with my gee.

Who are your industry role models, both locally and globally?

Tasha Cobbs and Michael W. Smith are two of my favorite musicians, but Jesus is my ultimate role model.

You have a distinct fashion sense, which is highlighted by your beret. What inspired the look, and how would you describe your personal style?
I just needed to stand out. I felt I needed to be distinct not only in my craft but also in my style. That is how berets became popular. Mecempire on Instagram has now evolved into an online business. In a nutshell, my fashion sense is understated.

What are some of the life lessons you’ve learned along the way?

I’ve learned that no matter how many plans a man has in his heart, God’s will always triumphs. This has allowed me to completely rely on Jesus in all aspects of my life. Also, whatever you want to achieve can only happen if you are deliberate about it.
