Olubisi, the mother of Osinbajo, celebrates her 90th birthday with a worship service

Published by on February 22nd, 2023.

Nigerians from all walks of life gathered in Lagos yesterday to celebrate the blessings of God in the life of their matriarch, Mama Olubisi Osinbajo, who turned 90.

The day began with a church service that included singing, prayers, musical performances, and biblical sermons.
An elated Mama Osinbajo, fondly nicknamed “Mumisco” by her many children, grand and great-grandchildren, was full of appreciation and gratitude at the thanksgiving service held at the Cathedral Church of St. Jude, Ebute-Meta, which featured songs ministration, praying that everyone at the event would also grow up to be 90 in good health and prosperity.

The Bishop of Lagos Mainland Diocese, Rt. Revd. Akinpelu Johnson, recalled Mama and her family’s early days at St Jude’s Cathedral, particularly her devotion to God’s service, in his sermon at the service.
He emphasized the importance of giving thanks and obeying God’s will, noting that a birthday celebration is “an opportunity to take stock of one’s life.”
While praying for Mama, Bishop Johnson declared that God would continue to work miracles in her because of her devotion to His work and obedience to His will, even at the age of 90.

Pastor E.A. Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, who also ministered at the service, prayed for the celebrant, thanked God for her life, and asked for God’s blessings on her and everyone present.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who wrote a personal letter to Mama Osinbajo, led the special celebration messages for Mama contained in the event brochure.

“On behalf of myself, my family, and Nigerians, we rejoice with Mama and wish her continued grace and joy in the Lord, all the days of her life,” the President said in a message released earlier by the Presidency. Amen.”
President Buhari thanked God for the gift of long life and all her accomplishments, especially “for giving Nigeria the gift of your son, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, and his other illustrious siblings.”
He also expressed happiness that, “the matriarch of the Osinbajo family had thought it worthy to establish the Olubisi Osinbajo foundation, which caters to the wellbeing of widows and families of clergymen. It is an initiative that I recommend to other endowed people in our society because it has lofty rewards not only now, but also in the future.”

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, for his part, said Mama was exceptional in many ways, but there were four things he learned from her.
“Four things I learned from Mama,” he says. The first is her personal integrity, which is simply telling the truth at all times. She simply did not tolerate lying, even if it appeared white or innocuous! She was also against excessive displays of wealth, believing that it reflected poor breeding. Her insistence on proper behavior, politeness, and respect for elders is the second. Third, she had always assumed I would be a lawyer. She always resisted any attempt to divert my attention. Her fourth quality is her devotion to the gospel and her prayerfulness.”

Several Nigerians, however, attended the event, including church members, top government officials, and other dignitaries.
They include the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, and his wife, Salamatu Gbajabiamila, who represented First Lady, Aisha Buhari; Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, while Mr. Lucky Ayedatiwa, the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, represented the State Governor Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank; Mr. Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation; and several Ministers were also present. There were also state government representatives and senior government officials present.

Captains of industry in attendance included Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group, and businessman and philanthropist, Mr Femi Otedola.
