We will not sit on the fence in the 2023 elections, says the African Church.

The youth of the African Church’s chapter in Akwa Ibom State have declared their intention to actively participate in choosing trustworthy leaders in the next elections.

They added that they wouldn’t remain neutral and let skeptics install individuals with a history of violence and dubious morality who would bring the state back to its days of terror and politically motivated killings.

The provincial youth president, Prince Enobong Oku, spoke at a New Year solemn assembly of the church. He recalled how a church member had been murdered inside the church under the previous administration and urged attendees to take control of their own destiny by voting for any candidate who preaches peace and is known to be God-fearing.

He asserted, “The church cannot afford to return to the days of violence and intimidation. I challenge all the young people and the church as a whole to follow the trend and not hold back, in keeping with the time when it is incumbent upon us to facilitate good governance through our participation in political activities.

“During the prior government, an African Church member was brutally murdered in a church. In light of this, we can all agree that the church does not wish to return to the violent era of politically motivated killings. Therefore, in order to ensure that the peace we currently experience is maintained, the youth of The African Church have decided to support the governor’s succession plan.

“Peace is the greatest gift God has given the church in Akwa Ibom, and we will do everything in our power to preserve it.”

In his homily earlier, the Most Rev. Emmanuel Udofia, a former Primate of the Church, urged Christians, particularly those in politics, not to be deterred by criticisms and attacks, saying that when a Christian is involved in God’s plan to save mankind, he will experience persecution just as the Apostles of Christ did.

“If you make yourself accessible to serve the people, be ready to endure hardships, and be ready to encounter hurdles, but keep in mind this: if you are in the plans of the Almighty God, you will undoubtedly succeed,” he stated. Anyone who is following God’s will will inevitably encounter opposition.

One of the state’s candidates for governor, Pastor Umo Eno, urged the populace to cast their ballots for a respectable candidate in his remarks.

The deliberate efforts to divert him with pointless lawsuits, along with the support of the Akwa Ibom people, he said, had made him resolved to win the election and serve the state with all of his heart and “righteous wrath.”
